24th September 2011 Cat: Modern Dining Chair with 1 Comment

The cushion sits on top of some netting which has stretched and worn out.

Best answer about What would you replace the sagging bottom of older dining room chairs with? Currently has some netting.?

My Grandmother had a chair with netting in it. We replaced it with canvas strips using a crisscross pattern, weaving it in and out.

It’s called caning. It’s a type of wicker. It can be very labor intensive to do your self.

A fresh caned chair usually doesn’t usually have a cushion since the caning is intricate and attractive, though some did. People tended to put cushions on the chair to try to compensate for the sagging/torn caning.
You can do as my mother did years ago. She got some thin plywood (painted to match the chair) and cut pieces the same shape as the caned area, with about a half to one inch overlap. She then screwed it to the chair and put a cushion on it. Basically you’re turning it into a standard hard seat chair.
