I am thinking of getting a French Country dining table with a walnut finish (at overstock.com) but I dont know what kind of chairs to go with it. I dont want fabric because I have two young sons. Also, I am worried if I try match the wood color it will just be off and look bad. Could I possible go with black wooden chairs? Some other color?

why not get leather parsons chairs, in a rich dark brown, it will be nearly indestructible to the boys. ( my sis has two very active daughters and has these chairs.) And they are so much more comfortable than wood. and you can probably find them at overstock.

I think black wooden chairs would look great! It may be hard to match the chairs with the wood on table, so i wouldn’t try. you cant go wrong with the black chairs.

If it is, I would note that it says that the table is “constructed of solid parawood” and “features a versatile walnut finish”. So look for chairs that are constructed of solid parawood and have a walnut finish to match accordingly. Also, if you want the chairs to be comfortable and have a little more of a homey, cozy feel get cushions that you can tie on to the chairs. You can get them in colors matching the theme of your dining room and if they get dirty, just untie, wash, and tie back on.
if you are doing country french you want to go lighter, like a white washed wood look. you can paint any wood though, white and then antique it with a brown antiquing glaze or even a colored one. or do each chair in a different color, nothing wrong with covered chair seats, you can reupholster them easily, unscrew seat, lay fabric over, turn over and staple to back of seat, screw back in.
Screw chairs use loveswings.
Get whatever chairs you want with high backs and put slip-covers over them with a tie in the back.
