I have oak dining room chairs and on the back of each where you would push it in is sticky. When I use dusting spray it just gets sticky as if there is dirty gunk build up. How do I remove the gunk without removing the clear finish or harm the wood?

I tried a Magic Earaser one time and it stripped the top coat. Since then I dust it with wood spray but havent ever got the sticky residue gunk off!

Pam cooking spray, any cooking oil, Murphy’s wood soap, or Old English (the oil, not the malt liquor).

G’luck!

You won’t be removing finish, you will be removing goo that used to be finish :-)

The acids in body oils will over long periods of time degrade the finish. There is no saving it, it is goo and is not doing its job — to protect, to beautify, and to provide a cleanable surface. In fact, it’s doing none of those.

You can do a good cleaning (I would recommend a alkaline cleaner like TSP) and if it’s not too bad, recoat with a lacquer. Your other option is to get it stripped and refinished.

Next time, do a regular cleaning to prevent a build up of these oils.

Try using w-d 40 oil. It won’t harm the finish.

Try some white vinegar on a soft cloth…

I would try my old standby of WD 40, I use it to remove marks off of almost everything in my house. (Including tar off a carpet once) Spray a bit on the back of the chair and rub off immediately.

The reason you are probably getting such a build up of “gunk” is because of the dusting spray (furniture polish) you are using, personally I stay away from all of that stuff as I find it makes things sticky and yucky more than nice and shiny! To clean all my wood furniture including oak I just use a mild dish soap and warm water, wring the rag out well and wipe down. Does a better job than any polish on the market and you won’t get the sticky gunk at the end of it all!
