We are moving into a new apartment soon and I am shopping for some new things for it. I have already purchased slipcovers in a flax color for my couch and chair and we are going to get a black coffee table and black end tables and black tv stand (etc, pretty much everything else black, thank goodness I was able to compromise a different couch color!!!) Anyway, the existing carpeting is like a grayish blue color and the walls are white. I told him no more black but now I have no idea what to do about the area rug and curtains.
I was also wondering if it is a good idea to have a matching area rug for the dining area? (The dining table is stained dark, but we got it used and until it can be refinished I am going to use a tablecloth to cover it, I have not purchased a table cloth yet. We were thinking of reupholstering the dining chair seats to match our slipcovers.
Here is a link to the slipcover: http://www2.jcpenney.com/jcp/Products.aspx?CatNum=RN737-7291FD&find+a+catalog+item.x=6&

I would try to get a rug that incorporates the blue, black and flax color. Something modern comes to mind….like this:

Or if that’s not your taste, then you can go with another design. But I think something that incorporates those colors will help bring it all together. Check out this site too for some color matching ideas:

Good Luck!

It sounds like you need a splash of color! You’ve already got relatively neutral tones right now, so really the possibilities are endless as far as the rug color is concerned. I think I would go for something bright & multi-colored, like one of these:

(I love the Ogee Rug on page 3)
I would get a different design for the dining area. When deciding whether to use two rugs in a room setting, it is best to vary the scale of the pattern and alter the design. The rugs don’t have to be identical, but they should match either in color tone or feeling. So you could get two contemporary rugs in different colors, or a contemporary and a traditional rug in the same color.
