I am wanting to paint my dining chairs and would love to know how much I would have to sand back the varnish to be able to paint them and for it to look lovely and not chip. I would prefer to not have to sand it the whole way back and am wondering if that is ok?

You have to sand it until all the varnish is gone.
Otherwise, the paint won’t stick.

    Dont go mad – as long as you make a key for the paint its fine. Good oil based undercoat maybe even two, then two coats of good gloss.
    Its time consuming and messy – do you really want to do this?
