I would say white, the same color as the trim would be best.
However, it’s only paint. Try which ever color you like. If it doesn’t look right, you can always repaint it.

You can paint it what ever color you want- nothing says it must match and many don’t.
Think Toast . If just a chair rail ,no pieces from chair rail to baseboard. white ,will just look like a stripe around the room. try toast first and let us know what you choose.
Whatever you like is what’s important. You could try going to SherwinWilliams.com; they have a great site that helps you co-ordinate colors. They even give examples of different rooms.
Go crazy and mix the red with the toast and paint it that color or go for something opposite and make a table cloth from the same color, be creative. Sounds like you want to break from tradition and you have my blessing

Most definitely not. Having varying textures and colors in a room can actually make it much more interesting. Sometimes you can get to matchy matchy and then everything looks blah. Just make sure the color you add is in good taste for the look you’re going for. If you look at all designer rooms, rarely do they have everything matching exactly.
