like..what is the main thing I see first when i see the dining table? …a beautiful old maple colored stain, and a very classic (not too modern, but not outdated) design. *** I like a design that has a warmth to it. It should be a piece of furniture that compliments your other aspects of your house…since now a days a lot of houses are “open” floor plan.

At a nicely set table (during a holiday or festive gathering), my line of sight always goes to the napkin: if it’s in a cool napkin ring, or is folded all fancy, that’s where I look. (It’s the first thing I have to “do” when I get to the table; the sooner I locate the napkin and place it on my lap, the sooner I can eat :) And it takes up the blank space on the table where the food should be! (If it’s not a special meal, I focus immediately on the blank space where the food should be.) You can use ribbon or pretty string as a napkin ring to match an occasion, and tie the same thing around water glasses, a pitcher, whatever -even to decorate the chair if it’s high-backed. That way the table and chair match. P.S. I bet there are some cool ‘how to fold napkins all fancy-like’ sites on the web?

normally the focal point in a dinning room should be a well set dinner table…! specially when it has a radial balance… attention goes to the center of that table first then travel around it…

however you can shift attention to the chairs or other elements in the room using colors, accessories, light, and scale… but this should be done for a good reason like a default in the table or a piece you’d really like to display…

    i don’t know if i answered you… have a nice day!

Center of table & light above. Dining room table light enhances the setting. A large table should have an oval longated center piece (type depends on your style).

My center pieces are sometimes Western with horseshoe napkin holder with matching horseshoe stickman holding salt & pepper. Or I may have large doily with seashell basket & candles inside of seashells. – - each to their own taste.
